January is the busiest time to find that little purebred at the pound. Ignorant owners start dumping them because they are no longer cute. Xmas puppies teethe, poop, whine and chew. BYB got their money, continue to breed, the shelters get overwhelmed and resort to euthanasia. Please spay and neuter in 2008. Don't add to the problem.

Yep. I also have found influxes of Christmas pups into rescue/shelter just before:
Memorial Day
4th of July
Labor Day
Partly because of spring shed, summer digging, kids heading back to school…. and partly because people don’t want to pay to board their dog when they go on holiday away from home.
AMEN
Heres A Geat Quote I Made:
Don’t Litter; Spay Your Dog
No one will admit it today, while they are all still in love with their cute lil’ pup … but do a survey in July & see how many will say they no longer have that pup because: it bit the kids (did they enroll in any training classes? no), it couldn’t be housetrained & it chewed up the couch (did they buy & use a crate? no).
Of course, it will be all the dog’s fault.
And next Christmas, they will get another cute lil’ pup, knowing it will be BETTER than the last lousy one.
Valentines day is another bad day for pups given as gifts.
Never give a dog as a gift.
im sure alot end up in the shelter….looking at the classifieds during christmas is crazy every ad start “PUPPIES READY FOR CHRISTMAS” OR “CHRISTMAS PUPPIES READY TO GO”, ” GREAT STOCKING STUFFERS”. It’s crazy. People should spay and neuter unless they are professional breeders breeding to better the breed and selling their dogs as “pet only” dogs with a spay or neuter contract.
That’s so sad. All these kids wanting puppies for christmas.. Then they realize “wow, this is too much work, i have better things to do!” So then they drop the poor little pup off at the pound. RIDICULOUS. Maybe instead of “myspacing” and chatting they should be doing a little research to find out what they’re getting themself into. wow.
We need to keep telling these ignorant pet owners. Just to think about how many to be euthanized is scary enough.
Happy New Year!!
I work for an animal rescue, and I frequently look at sights like Craigslists to see if there are owners desperate to get rid of their dogs. I’d rather take them into my home then them go to an overcrowded shelter.
I took a look Christmas evening, and thought to myself as I was getting to the page that in the next week or so, there would be a surplus of people getting rid of their Christmas animals. Well much to my horror, I was beginning to see it that evening. I saw a beautiful purebred Beagle that someone got this girl for Christmas but her landlord wouldn’t let her keep it.
Animals should not be gifts!!!! Pets should be something that someone plans for and really wants, and is willing to commit to. Then they should go pick it out for themselves. It really just makes me sick to my stomach to see that happening. I wish I could save them all, but just don’t have the room or resources to do it.
gross! thats awful!
Gosh, I don’t even want to think about that.
Amen.
Guys, why was it that day after X-mas petsmart was filled with people with 3 week old puppies trying to find out what they need to take care of a dog. I had a few owners stomp out angry because of how much it cost. Who are these terrible breeders!?!
In my opinion, too many.
We have already had phone calls since Christmas from owners regretting their ‘purchase’ for their kids: “They are POOPING in the house!”; “Why did the pet shop say they were trained?”; “My puppy is agressive, he is biting!”; “I didn’t know all the work…” blah blah. One was begging us to take the puppy off his hands. I had the owner come down to the clinic and called JRT rescue to come pick the 11 week old pup up. However, others are not so lucky. Owners rather dump them off at shelters or tie them outdoors at shelters after hours because they are too cowardly to show their faces. Sad, but true.
I think its don’t believe that its always bad to give a puppy as a gift, it just depends on the person you are giving it too. I would NOT give a puppy to a child as a gift, for the simple fact that the child will just view it as a toy, and we all know children get tired of toys eventually. I make sure that a dog is right for the person I intend on giving it too, and vice versa. I agree with you on January being the best time for finding purebreds in the pound. I think its a travesty that dogs are put through this because buyers don’t put much thought in their actions.
